The financial markets seem to be in a bit of a mess right now.
US president Trump’s new tariffs have caused a stir and loss of value in the financial markets. But there is a bigger issue at hand. It seems to be the Triffin dilemma playing out. But what is that?
The Triffin dilemma is currently being faced by the US because the US dollar is the main global currency. The US is in the situation where it has to print dollars for global trade, since they need to buy goods and services. They don’t produce much onshore, therefore they must buy. Because of this (lack of manufacturing), they are unable to generate the necessary funds to pay for the imported goods and services, plus maintain government and service it’s debts. The result? To put it simple, they print money, and the dollar is devalued, causing loss of trust in the currency.
The US now finds itself in a situation that cannot be sustained for much longer. So what is the solution? Transition to a neutral global reserve asset. That asset is Bitcoin. Why? Because Bitcoin is not controlled by any county or government. It’s fully decentralized asset and store of value. It cannot be manipulated. It’s liquid, portable and completely scarce. And one of the most important properties is the fact it’s completely verifiable. It’s audited every 10 minutes. It cannot be falsified, it’s fixed cap of 21 million cannot be increased.
